Field trip: Smithsonian Natural History Ancient Egypt and Mummies!

To conclude our study of Ancient Egypt with Sonlight, I thought it would be fun for Haylie and I to take a visit to the Smithsonian where we could see some real mummies and artifacts from the time period we spent months learning about!  There are 3 human mummies and many different animals that were mummified. Most interesting of the animals, I think to us, was the bull. It was fascinating and took on a whole new meaning for our family because we spent so much time talking about Ancient Egypt.

While in Georgia the kids met some incredible individuals from Egypt who were able to give a present day account of how things have changed. I think in their minds, Egypt was still an old place with Pharaohs walking around.  One of the men we met from Egypt, purchased a gift for Nick when he went back, a beautiful painting on papyrus. The kids loved it. After trying to explain just what it was, they were able to touch it and really understand a little about what we'd been studying. That's why it was so important to take Haylie here. Kaileb is with my mom for the week, but I'll be taking him when he returns.

If you have a chance to see this exhibit ever, it's not very big, but definitely worth a stop.  Plus, it's free!
