Field Trip: Marine Corps Museum

A few days ago the Marine Corps Museum hosted a homeschool day. It was a free event (the museum is always free to the public), so I thought it a perfect opportunity to get out of the house. After all, I did promise the kids we would be going on many more field trips than the public schoolers get to go on. While we have been fortunate to go out at least once a week and experience the area, it is getting wetter and cooler out forcing me to get more creative with field trip ideas. We're going to Oregon this week, does that count?

We love to visit the museum often. It's near and dear to my husband from the time he spent in the Marine Corps. (Did you know that Corps is pronounced core, not pronounced with the p? I overheard many moms correcting their kiddos this day!) Also it's FREE! When other people pay for a great museum experience I don't take the little ones. I don't think it would be any fun for anyone if they had to pay to hear Gavin get upset because he couldn't touch something!

It was better than I had expected it to be. Everyone who volunteered had served or is currently serving with the military. We spoke with a gentleman for a very long time who had been out for many many years. He knew so much about the Marine Corps!  I learned right along with the kids. It was a great event for kids of all ages. The kids learned about different airplanes and helicopters, the importance of correctly loading an airplane, and why some planes fly faster than others.  They got to play with the robots used by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team and ask all sorts of questions from men who actually do the job. There was a communications station, a Presidents Own station, and even a compass station.  We spent a couple of hours there before Gavin had enough of riding around in the stroller.

Thanks Marines past and present for all you do!
