Tornado K is by far the one who likes helping the most. Here he is making scrambled eggs for his big sister and little brother for breakfast!
Along with just having a necessary life skill, Tornado K gains knowledge in fractions and addition through measuring. He learns patience by having to wait for the food to cook or bread to rise. He reaps the reward of everyone's grateful smiles for preparing their food. It also really seems to boost the confidence of him and Little Lady. I reap the reward of getting to enjoy a task that might otherwise not be so fun. Who likes to cook 3-5 meals a day? Or more importantly, who enjoys cleaning up after 3-5 meals a day! Another big benefit to letting the kids help out in the kitchen is that most of the time, no matter what I make for dinner, they want to eat it because they are so proud of helping to prepare!
As far as age groups go, I hold Tiny Tyke on my hip as I make food sometimes and he really enjoys watching the steam from pasta or helping me stir something. At about three years old, I think most kiddos can assist in hold a beater and kneading bread or mixing ingredients. By 6, many kids will be able to prepare (under supervision) scrambled eggs, make toast and cereal, and measure and mix ingredients.
I really enjoy this time with them as I did when I was young. I remember my grandmother always had a job for me to help with.
I'd love to hear about any great "kid" recipes! Just leave a comment below!
