Is there any better place to be on Memorial day weekend than a military base? How can you not feel patriotic waking up to the sound of the bugle in the morning and Taps playing at night as you fall asleep?
The kids and I made the 8 hour drive to Ft. Gordon, GA yesterday and we are here visiting Nick while he has a few days off from training. It's so good to be able to hug my husband. We came down a little before his time off began, so we've been out exploring Augusta to keep ourselves from getting cabin fever in the hotel room.
There is a really nice park here on the base for the kids. As it gets pretty hot here, they have covered the play area. It makes playing in the heat much more tolerable for the kids (and myself).
We found a park off base called Pendelton King Park which was conveniently located just a few miles away. It's a bird sanctuary and home to all kinds of trees. We went for a while but Gavin was extremely tired so our visit didn't last long. It did last long enough that we were able to see a gosling and that was neat. It's parent made it very clear we were not welcome to get close. You can see in the picture the goose is staring at me. I've been chased by my fair share of hissing geese and I knew better than to get too close and frighten the birds. The ducks came right up to us, searching for a handout I assume. The mallard was just beautiful. We had hoped to see the persimmon trees but didn't stay long enough to search them out.
