I was so very excited to head to Savannah over the holiday weekend, but what I was most excited about was visiting Wormsloe Plantation. Nick had told me he wanted to take us there some time ago and I had been thinking about it ever since! I knew this would be a great place to get a beautiful picture of the entire family. Not that the others aren't beautiful (not biased at all), just that we have uh......NONE of us all together. I prefer to be behind that camera, taking snapshots of small moments I might otherwise forget. It was a perfect day following a few days of rain, for which I was so very thankful!
Wormsloe was the home of Noble Jones and is the oldest tabby ruin site in Georgia. The beautiful Oak Avenue was said to be planted by Wimberly Jones DeRenne for the celebration of the birth of his son. After our visit to Hilton Head I have a love for Spanish Moss. Of course, once you've seen it hanging so incredibly beautifully from the trees you don't have any other choice but to love it. Wormsloe was dripping with it. Driving down Oak Avenue was like entering paradise. I didn't want to leave. Nick kept mentioning how this place was actually meant for the Zini's, we were just 300 years too late.
We went down to the salt marsh, the first one I'd ever been to, and watched the tiny crabs race into their holes as our shadows approached. Kaileb spotted a pretty big one (about the size of his palm) but the rest were very small. The trails were littered with small lizards. We asked the kids what they thought it must have been like to have been a child living there in a different time. Haylie said she would have spent her day catching lizards and playing with dolls made of straw. Kaileb said he would have been happy to catch snakes and climb trees.
We walked through an area set up to show what it was like for people living and working in Colonial times. In the pictures above you can see the stations for Blacksmiths and an area where the kids were learning about how to churn butter.
It was a magical place just for it's beauty alone. I hope one day we go back to Wormsloe and walk the magnificent Oak Alley draped in Spanish Moss just as people have done for over 200 hundred years.
Dearest Megan, thank you so much for stopping by and commenting so I could visit your lovely space. I love seeing the photos of your beautiful family and in such a great place too.
ReplyDeleteIs your husband in the Army? My son in law is Army, stationed in Hinesville, but currently overseas defending our freedom.
Enjoy the day and I look forward to future visits.
Thank you so much for the beautiful kind words! Yes, my husband is in the Army as a reservist. He is currently training in Georgia for the summer. I hope your son-in-law and daughter are well. Deployments are so hard on a family and I am so thankful for men like him!
DeleteHave a wonderful day!
