After our trip to the pumpkin patch, of course we had to carve our pumpkins. I thought it would be perfect to turn it into a math project. The kids groaned with the thought of having to do school after they'd finished all their work for the day, but I promised to make it fun. I don't know that they've ever turned down anything I've dressed up with the word fun!
To begin with I had them guess about their pumpkins.
They were to guess the:
- Weight
- Circumference (a new concept for Kaileb)
- Seed count
After making guesses, they found the actual numbers for each. They completed a math problem with the seeds, Kaileb addition and subtraction, Haylie multiplication and division (She did need help with this one because the numbers were so big and we are just practicing with smaller numbers as of right now).
Some math vocabulary words we discussed were:
- Density
- Circumference
- Inches
- Pounds
- Greater and Less than
Do you have any great pumpkin math ideas? I'd love to hear them!
