In a household where four children roam and touch everything right after they've picked their noses or done something else incredibly gross, it's bound to happen that we get sick. Usually the illness only takes out one to two at a time, but there are occasions when everyone falls ill within 24 hours. It's awful. Anyway, when Gavin got sick last week Nick brought home a HUGE bottle of Gatorade. I didn't feel very good about him having it, of course Gavin didn't mind. It's like drinking a soda with added electrolytes in my opinion. It's not normal that he wouldn't love it and want to drink the entire gallon. The next day though Haylie started getting warm and refused to eat or drink a thing. I was motivated to make her a healthier option than the ones available at the corner store.
Making your own homemade electrolyte replacement is actually fairly simple and quick. I got out my juicer, but you don't need one to make this. You could make it more smoothie style if you have a blender!
This is a paleo friendly replacement for Gatorade as well. You can add raw honey or maple syrup for sweetness if you need it, but I think the coconut water lends plenty of sugar.
For this you'll need:
Coconut water
1 cup of strawberries
1/2 an orange, rind removed
1/4 lemon, rind removed
1/4 lime, rind removed
1/4 tsp. salt
Optional honey or sweetener
Juice your berries and citrus fruits, mix with coconut water and salt, add desired amount of sweetener. Drink up!
If you don't have a juicer or the energy to get it out I would just skip the lemon and lime. They are there mainly for flavor. Although the Vitamin C in the citrus aids in absorption of electrolytes and rehydration, the 1 cup of Strawberries contain more than 100% of your daily need of Vitamin C .
