Best play dough recipe

I've made play dough many times over the years and this is by far my favorite recipe!

My grandma used to make this for me when I was little (she taught preschool so she was all about craftiness)  and she swears this is the best ever play dough recipe.  The best part is from start to finish, you can start using it in about half an hour.

You'll need:

2 cups flour
2 cups water
2 tbls. oil (it doesn't really matter what kind; vegetable, canola, or olive should all be fine)
2 tbls. cream of tartar
1/2 cup salt
Food coloring of your choice

I use the rule of  2 to remember all this! For the salt I say in my head to use 1/4 cup twice so it fits in the rule of 2.  This is just the crazy way I remember.

First you need to boil the water. I add the food coloring right into the water. If you want your dough to be different colors you might want to wait. I added blue to the water and then split my dough in half.  I then added yellow to one half to make green.

While waiting for your water to boil, mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.

Just before adding the water to the flour, pour the oil into the water.

Mix it all together. It's going to be quite lumpy but just keep stirring! You can let it sit for a few minutes and then go back and stir some more. Add your color at this time if you didn't add it to the water before.

Once it's cool enough to handle, start molding it with your hands. This is a bit quicker than stirring in my opinion.

You've just made play dough! Have fun.

You can store it in a food storage bag to keep it from drying out.
